Fox drama chief Gold exits net

Fox Broadcasting Co. head of drama Ted Gold resigned Tuesday after three years on the job.

His decision is said to have come as a surprise to Fox's top management.

"Ted has been a great partner here," said executive vp programming Craig Erwich, who will take hands-on oversight of the network's drama department for the time being. "He's made a lot of incredible contributions to the company, he has been a pleasure to work with, and I wish him the best."

Gold, who joined Fox in July 2004 and has served as senior vp drama development, had been in talks about a new deal with the network.

"I've had a great opportunity at Fox, and I'm proud of what my team has accomplished," Gold said. "The industry is more exciting than ever, and I look forward to pursuing a number of fantastic opportunities."

During his tenure, Gold oversaw the development of "Prison Break" and "Bones," which are returning for a third season in the fall.

However, none of Fox's new dramas this past development season -- "Justice," "Vanished," "Standoff," "Drive" and "The Wedding Bells" -- lasted more than a few episodes.

The network's slate of upcoming drama series for next season -- all shepherded by Gold -- include the "Terminator"-themed "The Sarah Connor Chronicles," the cop shows "K-Ville" and "New Amsterdam" and the legal drama "Canterbury's Law."

Before joining Fox, Gold did stints at Spelling TV, Alliance Atlantis, New World Entertainment and CBS Entertainment.
